We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“Culture is dynamic, it’s changing every single day. Culture is never finished. Sometimes your culture doesn’t need a full teardown or rebuild but your culture just might need a renovation”

7:30 – Jason introduces today’s topic. Everyone in the cultural ecosystem helps create the culture. Most don’t need a full rebuild but do need to be revitalized or a renovation. Author Kevin Oakes in his book, Culture Renovation is referenced by Jason in this podcast as he likes the metaphor Kevin uses.

8:50 – Wherever you are in your culture journey, we are going to think about 3 phases, the design phase, the build phase, and the maintenance phase.

  1. Design phase – Lays out the blueprints for what you want to achieve. Check out the 6 A’s of leading change podcast here. Access what needs to be kept and carried forward, and identify what needs to be let go of. Follow the 6 A’s here as Jason mentions to bring the best of the design to life.
  2. Build phase – Gather people around and communicate the future vision of what you want to build. Jason goes into detail about the build phase.
  3. Maintenance phase – Recognize that culture isn’t finished. The culture must be maintained. Teach other leaders to help maintain your culture over time.

Questions to Ponder

  1. Where does your culture need a renovation next?

  2. What new design would be helpful to revitalize your culture?

  3. What new building plan would help your practice the actions and behaviors that you have identified for the culture you want to create?

  4. What commitments are you willing to make to maintain the culture moving forward for the years in the future?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
