Better Good with Scott Curran
Summary
In an era dominated by heavy headlines and rapid market shifts, leaders often assume that driving meaningful social impact requires massive financial pledges, global non-profit initiatives, or grand corporate gestures. However, sustainable organizational change and authentic leadership stem from a much simpler principle: all good is good, and everyday intentional actions compound into lasting transformation.
On this episode of The Thermostat Podcast, host Jason V. Barger is joined by Scott M. Curran—author of Better Good: A Simple System for Creating Lasting Impact, founder and CEO of Beyond Advisors, and former General Counsel of the Clinton Foundation. Together, they explore the intersection of human biology, purpose-driven corporate culture, and leadership in teams. By understanding how humans are wired for goodness, how purpose accelerates business growth, and how to deploy a practical impact framework, leaders can elevate the temperature of their organizations and turn everyday intentions into scalable results.
All Good is Good: Redefining Social Impact
A common barrier in modern culture-building is the myth of the grand gesture. Executives and team members frequently undervalue their daily efforts because society tends to celebrate outsized headlines—mega-donations, novelty-sized checks, or international relief trips.
While grand initiatives serve as inspiring tentpoles, smaller, daily actions account for the overwhelming majority of human goodness and community support. Whether it is holding a door, mentoring a junior colleague, offering genuine appreciation, or picking up trash during a neighborhood walk, micro-actions create an immediate ripple effect.

When organizations recognize that “all good is good,” they remove the friction of waiting for perfect conditions. Leadership in teams becomes less about managing isolated campaigns and more about cultivating an everyday environment where small, positive contributions are recognized, shared, and scaled.
The Social Impact Framework: 3 Ps, 3 Ts, and 3 Ss
To help individuals and institutions transition from good intentions to structured, lasting execution, Curran outlines a simple, highly adaptable framework:
1. The 3 Ps (Your Foundation)
- Profile: Who you are and how you show up in the world. It is the multi-faceted identity and reputation you project across your personal and professional life.
- Platform: The spheres of influence you occupy—your family, your workplace, your local community, and your professional networks. Most leaders stand on wider, more interconnected platforms than they realize.
- Passion: The causes and values you care about most deeply. The goal is to identify your “Goldilocks Zone”—the intersection of what you care about most and what you are best at doing—ensuring you stay committed when challenges arise.
2. The 3 Ts (Your Contribution)
- Time: How you allocate your presence and availability.
- Talent: The unique skills, professional expertise, and insights you share.
- Treasure: The financial or material resources you contribute toward positive change.
3. The 3 Ss (Your Growth)
- Scale: Expanding the reach and efficiency of your efforts.
- Sustain: Building operational systems that keep initiatives alive across changing seasons.
- Storytelling: Communicating the impact effectively to inspire, align, and mobilize others.
Human Biology & The Chemistry of Goodness
The drive toward purpose is not merely an abstract ideal; it is hardwired into human biology. Humans evolved to cooperate, care for one another, and build civil societies. When we engage in or witness acts of goodness, our brain releases four primary neurochemicals:
- Dopamine: Triggers a sense of pleasure and reward upon taking positive action.
- Oxytocin: Fosters deep bonding, empathy, and interpersonal trust.
- Serotonin: Regulates mood, pride, and social connection.
- Endorphins: Reduces stress and generates a natural “runner’s high”.

Remarkably, humans do not even need to perform the good deed directly to experience this neurochemical boost. Simply observing a colleague perform a selfless act or watching an uplifting video triggers the exact same positive response. In a modern workplace, curating an atmosphere of appreciation and shared wins acts as a biological antidote to cynicism and burnout.
The Business Case for Purpose-Driven Corporate Culture
Far from being a “soft” administrative preference, embedding purpose into corporate culture yields direct, measurable commercial returns. Research from leading research firms consistently confirms that value-aligned organizations outperform their peers:
Employees—particularly younger demographics—do not leave their values at home when they log into work. When leadership actively demonstrates organizational empathy—caring about what their people care about—employee retention rises, recruitment costs plummet, and overall output accelerates.
Conversations as the Currency for Change: “Putting Up the Bat Signal”
Cultural transformation does not require complex, multi-year overhauls before taking the first step. It begins with simple, intentional dialogue. Conversations are the primary currency for organizational change.
When a team leader opens a meeting by asking, “What do each of you care about, and how can we support it as a team?”, they are “putting up the Bat Signal”. This simple prompt signals that management sees employees as complete human beings rather than transactional units.

By facilitating conversations around shared impact—whether supporting a cause of the month, organizing a service day, or matching charitable contributions—leaders set an authentic, warm temperature that energizes their entire ecosystem.

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT
Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.
A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
