Culture-shaping happens at every level throughout an organizational ecosystem. However, identifying, clarifying and developing the emerging leaders in your cultural strategy is often underutilized.

We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“When we talk about our feelings they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary” – Mr. Rogers
3:00 – Jason introduces today’s topic. Does the senior leadership team set the culture in alignment with what they want to create? Check out Jason’s past episode about Cultural Dissonance to better understand the foundational principles Jason talks about today. Beyond the senior team, do managers set the temperature for the culture they need to create? Or is there cultural dissonance in there? All who are a part of the cultural ecosystem help shape the future culture. It isn’t static, it is always growing and changing by the way we think, act, and interact; every person. One of the key segments that sometimes gets overlooked is emerging leaders. Those who have been in the team for a while but are not quite in the leadership role they someday will have. On today’s podcast, we talk about identifying and properly supporting emerging leaders. So that they can become the cultural ambassadors that your team is going to need.
7:19 – Within teams and organizations, cultural dissonance is when there is a cultural clash against the vision or culture we are trying to create. Simply put, we say one thing but do another. Jason cites some examples such as a leader who says to be prepared and prepped and do the little things for the moment but when they are actually needed are late for meetings and not prepared themselves. This is an example of cultural dissonance from management.
10:20 – The groups that thrive and grow understand that supporting the development of emerging leaders is important. They recognize that people should not just rest on what they say but managers should actually coach up and teach so that becomes the new wave of their culture. This accelerates company growth in a big way by supporting emerging leaders. Here are the top four tips for developing emerging leaders in your company:
- Identify – Who are they? Who are the people in your team that you cant afford to lose?
- Clarify Behaviors – How do you want them to uniquely develop. What are the styles and types of leaders you are trying to develop?
- Support Development – It won’t magically happen. When left unattended they will develop bad habits. Development is significant, and if you don’t nurture that then your people will leave. Commit to it in time, in money, and in education.
- Anchor it – Don’t stop with a one-time plan or program. Continue to build habits, practices, and strengthen their current roles and also their future roles.

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT
Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.
A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
